Z.S.D Math 7B 10-9-10 Mathematical Reflections: Investigation 5 In this investigation, you learned how to use a graphing calculator to make graphs and tables from equations. These questions will help you summarize what you have learned: 1. Write a letter to a friend explaining how to use a graphing calculator to make graphs and tables. Use a specific example to illustrate your explanation. Dear Friend, Have you ever wanted to learn how to graph an equation on a TI-84 calculator? Well I can teach you how. Step One: Turn on your calculator by pressing the button ON Step Two: Below your screen on the left side, press the button Y= Step Three: Next to \Y1= press the keys to make 3x+2 Once you have /Y1=3x+2, you need to press the button GRAPH on the lower right hand side of your screen. Step Four: By this time you should see a graph appear on your screen. Now that you have learned how to make a graph, making a table is super easy. Press the button 2ND and then press GRAPH again. Tah Dah! A table of your graphing information should appear on your screen. I hope you now have a clear understanding on how to graph and table an equation. -Zoe
2. The number of tents the tour organizers need is 1/2 times the number of customers. a. Write an equation for a rule you can use to calculate the number of tents for any number of customers. Number of tents= T Number of customers= C T= 1/2C b. Does your equation give you enough information to make a table and a graph? Why or why not? Yes, Even if you don’t have the information on the total number of customers, you can still find out how many tents by using the equation. 3. Think of a situation which you can make a graph and a table, but not an equation. I was looking through my notebook to see if I could find any lessons we learned on tables and graphs and I found that you can make a table and a graph of The Number of Jumping Jacks, but you can’t make an equation. This occurs because every ten seconds the numbers of jumps vary. So you can’t have an exact equation.
Think about your answers to these questions, discuss your ides with other students and your teacher, then write a summary of your findings in your journal. In this lesson I learned how to use a graphing calculator and how to turn the graph into a table. I learned that you can input an equation into the calculator and a graph or table of the equation will appear. I learned how to construct an equation with variables and form them in a way to match the problem given.
